Serial Burglar Arrested in Weston: BSO

A man wanted in a string of overnight burglaries in Weston was caught just minutes from one of three homes he burglarized, deputies say.

According to the Broward Sheriff's Office, Weston District, Matthew Hamilton was spotted crouching in the bushes just minutes from the 600 block of Spinnaker. Deputies say Hamilton broke through the window of a house on Spinnaker around 8 a.m. as the resident slept.

Once inside, BSO says Hamilton stole various electronics and jewelry. The homeowner was woken up by the noise and saw Hamilton inside the home.

Hamilton was apprehended just minutes away.

Detectives believe Hamilton had already burglarized two other homes in the neighborhood. One home in the 16900 block of Royal Poinciana Drive just before 3 a.m., and another in the 500 block of Spinnaker just before 5 a.m.

In all three homes, the victims were inside the home sleeping.

Hamilton has a lengthy history of charges relating to burglary and drugs dating back to 2009, according to BSO.

Most recently, he was arrested in September for burglary, possession of burglary tools, grand theft, resisting without violence and loitering.

Hamilton now faces new burglary and loitering charges.

It is not known if Hamilton has hired an attorney.
