Stranger Helps Liberty City Family With Hotel

A family who resides in a problem-plagued Liberty City apartment building will have a warm place to sleep after a total stranger put them up in a hotel Thursday.

It's a temporary fix. The landlord at the Liberty City Apartments at 1231 Northwest 61st Street still has repairs to make or power will be shutoff Friday to the entire building.

Jameena Grimes and her family has been living with out power for a week but will have a new place to stay thanks to Damion McKenzie.

"I'm very grateful for that because other than that we was gonna be here," Grimes said.

After hearing about Grimes and her three teenagers on the news McKenzie said he just knew what he had to do.

"[They're] total strangers. It was just a feeling, no reason, just a feeling," he said. "It's gonna be cold, you gotta be able to help somebody out."

But there's a bigger problem that needs thawing. A City of Miami electrical inspection found the power meters damaged and tampered with. A city commissioner's office tells NBC 6 if the problem isn't fixed Friday, all the other tenants in the building will lose power.

"The chief electrical engineer for the City of Miami told me and management that if those repairs are not made by Friday morning, which is tomorrow, that he will be disconnecting power to the entire building," Grimes said.

The power problems developed after Grimes complained about the deplorable living conditions. Records show the building is in disrepair, has structural deficiencies and isn't safe.

"It's ridiculous it had to get this far. These issues could have been taken care of long time ago," Grimes said.

City commissioner's office said they're gathering the facts to assist residents in the building.
