A sheriff from Florida’s Treasure Coast is calling out several counties in the southern part of the state – including Miami-Dade and Broward – after a rash of vehicle burglaries.
Martin County Sheriff William Snyder told NBC affiliate WPTV-TV there have been more than 20 cases in the last week – including one where six teens from Broward were arrested and another involving a carjacking suspect arrested near Miami.
”There’s a lack of fear of incarceration,” said Snyder, who worked for 20 years with the Miami-Dade Police Department before moving to Martin County in the 1990s. ”They’re leaving here with a stolen car which they will sell and then that car will invariably be sold overseas.”
Snyder said the “career criminals” use the close proximity of Interstate 95 to travel from South Florida to the area just north – triggering an increased presence of law enforcement on the road as well as undercover patrols from the South Florida burglary task force.
“We need the Florida Legislature to start making meaningful sentence reform where sentences are not reduced but increased,” Snyder added. “We need facilities to put these young people who are pathological in their outlaw behavior.”
