Wilton Manors Fire Kills Dog and Two Cats

A South Florida woman is in tears after her apartment caught on fire, killing her dog and two cats Monday.

The fire occured at the 2600 block of Northeast 8th Avenue in Wilton Manors.

"I smelled smoke and it was getting worse and I walked outside. I saw it coming out of my neighbor's window," said Ken Martin, a neighbor.

Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue crews arrived and battled the intense heat and found a dog and two cats unconscious inside the bedroom. After several minutes of resucitation attempts, the animals did not survive.

Neighbors said the woman living inside the apartment was always out walking her golden retriever.

Some of the apartment complex residents had to leave their units for several hours while crews contained the fire.

Power was temporarily disabled but is now back on. The Red Cross was assisting the woman who lived in the burned unit.
