Hagel Orders Review of U.S. Nuclear Force

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel on Thursday ordered a sweeping review of the U.S. military’s nuclear weapons mission following reports that 34 officers who operate missiles had been removed from launch duty for allegedly cheating on routine proficiency tests. The lower-level officers, all assigned to the 341st Missile Wing at Malmstrom Air Force Base, are accused of apparently texting answers to each other on a monthly proficiency exam in the summer of 2012, or knew that the cheating was going on and didn't report it, according to defense officials. However, Hagel made a rare visit to a nuclear missile base earlier this month to boost morale, calling their work "of great importance to the world."
