Three U.S. soldiers were killed and several were wounded Sunday by insurgents in eastern Afghanistan, military officials said. The service members were assigned to the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force. Officials did not provide any other details. The latest attack comes as the United States prepares to withdraw combat troops from Afghanistan by the end of next year. As of Aug. 9, at least 2,124 U.S. soldiers had died in the 12-year war in Afghanistan, according to the Defense Department. Of those, 1,759 were killed in action.
