TV Ownership Falls for First Time in 20 Years

Have you ditched the boob tube yet? For the first time in two decades, the number of Americans who own televisions is believed to be in decline, according to a new report. The Nielsen Co crunched census data with its own surveys to estimate 96.7 percent of households will own TVs in 2012, down from 98.9 percent this year, Reuters reported. At fault is the 2009 digital TV transition combined with the Great Recession and the trend toward cord cutting among tech-savvy consumers, according to The New York Times. “The long-term effects of this are still unclear, as it is undetermined if this is also an economic issue that will see these individuals entering the TV marketplace once they have the means, or the beginning of a larger shift to online viewing,” Nielsen said in its report.
