No Bond for Woman Who Locked Down Broward Schools

Elllisa Martinez is accused of e-mailing threats of a school shooting to a local radio station

Ellisa Martinez won't be getting out of time out anytime soon.

The woman accused of e-mailing and then phoning a radio station that her fake husband was going to shoot up a school in Broward County was denied bond by a federal judge Monday and will remain in jail.

The 48-year-old resident of New Port Richey is charged with interstate communication of a threat to injure another, which carries up to a five-year prison sentence for the Nov. 10 incident.

Lawyers allege Martinez sent an e-mail to WFTL 850 AM pretending to be a radical who supported talk show host Joyce Kaufman. In the e-mail, the author made a threat that something big was going to happen at a government building or a school. Moments later, Martinez then called the station claiming to be the wife of the author.

The threat forced law enforcement officials to lock down all 300 Broward schools for several hours as concerned parents and students learned of the hoax through media outlets.

The FBI quickly traced the origins of the e-mail and phone calls to Martinez, who fled to California before authorities finally caught up with her.

Monday, the judge said because of her actions directly after the threats, Martinez was a flight risk.
