One person is dead after a police chase ended with a fight and police opening fire. The chain of events started when a pedestrian was hit and the suspect fled the scene.

Pinecrest Police pursued the suspect down U.S. 1 to the Palmetto Expressway which the suspect entered and traveled north. The chase ended in Miami Springs when the suspect got out of his car and began to run.

Miami-Dade Police said the suspect got in a fight with an officer and tried to take his weapon. That’s when shots rang out.

“We saw the K-9 unit and SWAT team search the house and we saw hastily go around the house,” said Miami Springs resident Jerry Escobito. “As the officer rounded the house, we heard one shot and then we heard five shots in rapid succession.”

Miami-Dade Police said once other officers saw the struggle and the suspect trying to take the gun, they opened fire on the subject.

The Florida Highway Patrol is conducting the investigation.
