A Happy Thanksgiving for Miami's Homeless

Thousands of members of South Florida's homeless community received a hot meal and more for Thanksgiving thanks to the Miami Rescue Mission and Broward Outreach Centers.

The event was The Great Thanksgiving Banquet Outreach and Block Party held at the Miami Rescue Mission at 2020 Northwest 1st Avenue.

Anyone who needed it was given free clothes, haircuts and health education and screening by outstanding Hialeah Gardens High students donating their holiday time.

“As a community we want to help these people get better and we don’t want to lose lives, this is why we're here, to make them better," Roselyn Benitez said.

And the barbers were some of the best around.

"I got the best barber here so I’m good," Harold Davis said.

The main attraction was the turkey and all the fixings, and there was a lot of it. About 3,000 meals were given out.

"We've been prepping turkeys for about a week now, we cooked 200 turkeys," one volunteer said. "240 pounds of string beans, 100 pounds of potatoes, 125 pounds of stuffing."

"We can't afford meals, we can’t afford a haircut or medical care, this is real great," Clarence Heatly said.
