Relatives Fight For Custody of Overtown Shooting Victim's Children

Relatives of a woman shot and killed in her Overtown apartment Tuesday are fighting for custody of her two children who police say were inside the home when their mother was shot.

In court Wednesday, a sister, aunt, and cousin of 33-year-old Scorro Delgado appeared before a judge in an effort to obtain custody of the two children, one an infant and the other a four-year-old.

According to the family, the older child was born blind in his right eye and has only 30 percent vision in his left eye. The family also says the boy may have a brain tumor.

A judge indicated that it will take some time to determine custody and what is in the best interest of the children, as all of the family members will first need to be evaluated. In the meantime, the relatives will be permitted to visit with the children two times a week for two hours.

The children will remain in police custody waiting on next of kin to receive them, according to police.

Sources tell NBC 6 South Florida that police were called after neighbors heard loud fighting coming from the first floor corner apartment at Northwest Eighth Street and Northwest Fourth Avenue in Overtown around 5:30 a.m. Tuesday.

According to neighbors, Delgado lived in that apartment with the two young children and her boyfriend, Wilmar Salmeron.

Police say Delgado was shot in the head while her two children were inside that apartment overnight Tuesday.

Miami Police arrested Salmeron in connection with that shooting. He is now facing second degree murder charges.
