NTSB Investigates Airplane Hard Landing in Homestead

Federal investigators have arrived in South Florida to investigate what caused a small plane to make a hard landing in Homestead Monday leaving two people injured.

The incident was reported in the 28700 block of Southwest 217th Avenue. Officials said two people, a pilot and passenger, were on board the single-engine Piper plane when the pilot lost control during landing. The plane bounced and came to a rest near a fence.

The 56-year-old pilot was airlifted to Jackson South where he remains in critical condition. His passenger was taken to Homestead Hospital and was later released, NTSB officials said Tuesday.

Miami-Dade Police identified the pilot as Edgar Santiago-Gonzalez. His passenger was 48-year-old Lionel Naraidu. The pilot and passenger were the only two people on board the plane.

According to NTSB officials, the plane had taken off from Tamiami Airport and was performing "touch and goes."

The NTSB if investigating the cause of the crash and exploring if weather as well as possible mechanical failures were factors, officials said.
