Officers Fire at Man Fighting With Wife at Dadeland Mall, Man Facing Charges: Police

A man will be facing charges after police say he got into a violent fight with his wife at Dadeland Mall in Kendall Tuesday night, then drove straight at officers who tried to stop him, forcing them to shoot at the vehicle.

Miami-Dade Police said 36-year-old Michael Guzman was at dinner with his wife and relatives around 9:40 p.m. when he and his wife got into an argument. Guzman started pulling his wife by her arms to remove her from the table, according to police.

A family member who was leaving got out of their car to help Guzman's wife. Police said Guzman then pushed his wife into the vehicle and drove away. The woman opened the passenger door and jumped out of the moving car.

Police, who were in the area working on an unrelated case, immediately intervened. Authorities said Guzman ignored officers' commands to stop and drove directly toward detectives, prompting one of them to fire at the car.

Investigators later found Guzman in the area of Southwest 88th Street and Southwest 61st Avenue as he tried to get away in another car.

Guzman was taken to a local hospital for treatment of chest pains. His wife was taken to a local hospital, where she is listed in stable condition.

Guzman was later charged with kidnapping, aggravated battery and false imprisonment. He appeared in court Wednesday afternoon where he was ordered held without bond. It is not known whether he has hired an attorney.

Police said no one was injured during the incident.
