PAL Gives Free Backpacks to Kids

With the first day of school around the corner, deserving children were able to save on their school supplies

Some kids in Miami won't have to shop for new school supplies this year.

The Miami Police Athletic League handed out a thousand free backpacks stuffed with school supplies Saturday afternoon at Charles Hadley Park.

"I feel wonderful because my mom doesn't have to buy me a book bag and I don't need her saying I don't need money for this and that,” said student Miltoneisha Stubbs.

The giveaway lifted the financial burden for many struggling parents.

"I feel really awesome that I was able to get these things and not have to worry about purchasing a book bag or any school supplies," said parent Chamekka Jones.

Jones also brought her daughter to the health fair for a free dental screening.

"I got my teeth checked, found out I have two cavities, " said student A'yami Aranha, who received a dental screening.

Community Smiles, a non-profit dental clinic, says parents often forego that trip to the dentist when money's tight.

"They may not be able to afford getting a new toothbrush or buy toothpaste. They definitely overlook getting in to see the dentist,” said Dr. David DePorter of Community Smiles.

But this year, the PAL believes many kids will be doing better in school. And their parents will feel a little less pressure.

"They appreciate our efforts and our support and that helps to bridge the gap between the police and our community which is what we're trying to do here," said Miami Police Sgt. Nicole Davis.

The event concluded with fun and free food out here at Charles Hadley Park. The school year starts in just two days.
