Young Girl Casts Wish Into the Ocean, Hoping for Help

15-year-old Aviselle Diaz wants to attend school in Jordan but can’t afford the tuition

Faced with few options of realizing her dream of studying abroad, 15-year-old Aviselle Diaz decided to cast her wish into the ocean.

In three-page hand-written note, the Kendall teenager solicited help to make her wish come true.

The letters were rolled up, slid into 100 hand-decorated glass bottles and dropped from bridges and piers into the water, the Miami Herald reported.

Diaz hopes the messages in the bottle will put her one step closer to raising the money she needs to pay for the year-long cultural immersion program at King’s Academy in Jordan.

“My bottle was my last opportunity to save this project,” Diaz told the Herald.

Diaz, who aspires to be a diplomat, was accepted into King’s Academy boarding school that offers intensive training in Arabic and immersion in cultural and historic values. Though she was offered some financial aid to offset the $39,200 tuition, she has not been able to raise the remaining $12,400, the newspaper said.

"I see the impact the Middle East has on our society," Aviselle told the Herald. "But I also want to help people there, especially promoting education among women."

Together with her father, she worked to reach out to local businesses for financial help but returned empty handed.

Diaz has until Aug. 20 to raise the rest of her tuition and be able to attend the school.

In her letter, Diaz asks strangers to donate to the school in her name. She hopes her message will float to giving hands.

“I write to you dear reader as my last resort,” the note reads, according to the Herald. “And pray that you who have found this plea riding on the ocean waves will find it in your heart to help me in any way possible.”
