US Postal Service Looking to Raise Price of First Class Stamp

If you’re going to be mailing any bills, letters or other items in the future, the United States Postal Service wants you to hand over another penny for your first class stamp.

The news comes after the agency reported a quarterly loss of $562 million this week - in spite of growth in package delivery.

The USPS is carrying less first-class mail and facing expensive mandates for retiree healthcare obligations, as they are required to pre-fund long-term pension and healthcare liabilities for workers at a price tag of nearly $404 billion.

Federal law mostly bars the postal service from raising prices higher than the rate of inflation, but the service is now seeking special permission from congress to do just that from the current price of a first class forever stamp, which is 49 cents.
