Man Cleared of Twin Brother's Charges Because He Was Already in Prison

A man who was arrested on charges of aggravated assault claims his twin brother was the one who committed the crimes. NBC 6’s Claudia DoCampo reports.

In a case of mistaken identity, the man who faced a judge on Tuesday could not have committed the crimes of which he was accused because he was in prison when they occurred.

Facing Miami-Dade Bond Court Judge Renatha Francis: Savalas Cigar.

The man accused of the crimes: Tavalas Cigar.

Tavalas Cigar is facing charges of aggravated assault with a firearm and battery. Savalas Cigar, who recently was released from an 18-year prison sentence, explained the situation to the judge.

The victim of the incident and Savalas Cigar's mother were at the court to help clear up the situation.

“Savalas Cigar has been in prison for 18 years. He just got out," his mother said.

“I’ve dated his brother, his twin, for four years so I know the difference," the victim said.

Francis cleared Savalas of the charges during the court session. Authorities are attempting to locate Tavalas Cigar, who also has a previous criminal record.
