2 Kids Struck By Vehicle in Pompano Beach: BSO

Two children were transported to the hospital after being struck by a vehicle.

It happened around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at 100 Northeast 26th Street in Pompano Beach.

The Broward Sheriff's Office said two children were riding their bikes when they were struck by a Camaro. The driver remained at the scene.

The children, ages 10 and 11, were both transported to area hospitals with unknown injuries.

Latesha Barkely said the 11-year-old is her nephew, "He's breathing okay. His blood pressure is okay. I just saw him. He has a broken leg, a bruised lip."

Investigators said the kids left an elementary school and rode their bikes into the roadway. The driver who hit them told deputies another vehicle was blocking his view and he didn't see the children until it was too late.

"Once he did see the children, he tried to swerve to avoid hitting them, but he did strike them," said Gina Carter with BSO.

No further details have been released.

BSO was continuing its investigation, but there's no word on whether the driver will face charges.
