MIAMI DOLPHINS NAME DENNIS HICKEY NEW GENERAL MANAGER
Tampa Bay Buccaneers executive Dennis Hickey has been hired as general manager of the Miami Dolphins, ending an arduous search that lasted nearly three weeks. Hickey has been with the Buccaneers for 18 seasons, including the past three as director of player personnel. He was their director of college scouting for six years.
MAN TRIES TO ESCAPE POLICE, JUMPS TO DEATH IN CANAL
Police said a man that was arrested and placed in handcuffs ran across a busy intersection and jumped to his death in a nearby canal in North Miami Beach. Although it is still unclear why, Sunny Isles Beach Police stopped the man during a traffic stop at about 5:30 p.m. Saturday. The man was then handcuffed, but he took off and ended up jumping off a bridge into a canal. He died later at a nearby hospital.
VENEZUELANS HOLD PROTEST FOR PEACE IN SOUTH FLORIDA
Members of South Florida's large Venezuelan community staged a peaceful protest in solidarity with activists in their home country. Venezuelans met at a plaza Sunday in Doral and will read a proclamation for peace. Participants wore white and called for an end to deaths, hate and fear.
ELDERLY MAN FOUND DEAD ON HOLLYWOOD ROADWAY
Police are investigating a possible homicide in Hollywood after officials found an unresponsive elderly man lying on the roadway. Officials said there was trauma to the body. The man was not immediately identified.
FLORIDA LOTTO JACKPOT RISES TO $3 MILLION
The jackpot in the Florida Lotto game has grown to $3 million after no one matched the six winning numbers in the latest drawing, lottery officials said Saturday. The winning Florida Lotto numbers selected Saturday were 02-03-07-21-36-43.
SCOTT WANTS TO CUT CORPORATE FILING FEES
Florida Gov. Rick Scott is proposing to cut annual corporate filing fees. Scott next week will roll out his proposed budget recommendations to the Florida Legislature. The Republican governor wants to save businesses $33 million by reducing fees paid when companies register with the state.
