    Battle Against Zika-Spreading Mosquitoes Ramps Up in Broward

    It's the sound of war, as the on-going battle against mosquitoes continues Wednesday.

    The stakes are now much higher in Broward County, after health officials confirm 15 people were likely infected by the Zika virus in Miami-Dade County.

    "Right now we have the every bit concern of the Zika virus in our mosquitoes," said Anh Ton. "We've repurposed and resigned additional public works staff to do mosquito control."

    State health officials confirm one non-travel related case of Zika in Broward. Anh Ton said it's in the Davie and Southwest Ranches area, and sexual transmission hasn't been ruled out. The health department still believes the virus is only being spread from mosquitoes the Wynwood area of Miami.

    "We've pretty much tripled our staff for mosquito control," said Anh Ton

    One neighbors says it's too close to home: "Everybody is talking about it right now and obviously we're concerned and using lots of bug spray."

    In addition to spraying, Mosquito Control tells us its also visiting homes with health officials to look for potential breeding spots and educate folks on how to "mosquito proof" their homes.

    "If you keep them from breeding in the first place they can't bite," said Anh Ton.
