Family Tied Up During Armed Home Invasion

Police looking for trio of robbers who terrorized Sweetwater family

A group of robbers are on the run after they tied up a Sweetwater family during a frightening armed home invasion Sunday night.

Officers say just before 11 p.m., three masked men approached an apartment unit on Northwest 2nd St. and 117th Ave. They knocked on the door, and a woman inside didn’t know who was knocking but she opened anyway.

"Several offenders came to the apartment here on the 2nd floor," explained Sweetwater Police Lt. George Delara. "When the victims opened the door they forced their way into the apartment demanding money."

Police said a 2-year-old child was inside the home during the robbery, watching it all happen as the three armed men tied up the mother and father and ransacked the place.

The thugs took off with jewelry and cash.

Investigators said this sad scenario could happen to anyone, and that homeowners have to be more cautious.

"Most definitely have the appropriate style and type of locks on your door, chains, have a peep hole to look to make sure you don’t open the door to an unknown person," Delara said.

Delara said the robbers speak Spanish, but none of the victims got a good description of them.

Anyone with information on the robbery is asked to call Miami-Dade CrimeStoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
