Boy, 14, Arrested for Shooting Sister in Leg

Miami woman shot in leg as siblings fought over rifle: Police

A 14-year-old boy has been arrested after he allegedly shot his older sister in the leg after a family argument turned violent, police said.

Kerris Smith was charged with battery and aggravated assault with a firearm Friday.

The incident happened around 4 p.m. Thursday at a home in the 1200 block of Northwest 38th Street, when officers responded to a report of a person shot, according to Miami Police.

Police said Smith and his 22-year-old brother got into a fight in the front yard of the house. Smith ran inside the house and got a rifle out of his room and came back outside, pointing it at his brother, an arrest report stated.

During a struggle over the gun, the gun went off. The bullet hit the leg of Smith's 24-year-old sister, who was also outside.

The woman was taken to a nearby hospital where she was in good condition, police said.
