A man convicted in a 2011 sledgehammer attack that left a Little Havana grocery store clerk with permanent injuries was given life behind bars Friday.

Rodobaldo Sanchez, 53, was convicted in February on attempted murder and armed robbery charges in the attack on Yue Kui Cen.

Prosecutors said Cen was working behind the counter of Alex's Mini Mart at 501 Northwest 12th Avenue on Dec. 18, 2011, when he was brutally attacked by Sanchez, who hit him several times with a hammer.

Cen suffered brain damage as a result of the attack and can't speak. He's wheelchair-bound and severely incapacitated.

Prosecutors said the whole attack was planned and that Sanchez went to the store to steal cigarettes and milk.
