Man Admits to Firing at George Zimmerman; Claims Self Defense

The attorney for the man involved in the Lake Mary shooting involving George Zimmerman said his client didn't break any laws and acted in self-defense.

Matthew Apperson called 911 to report the shooting Monday in the Orlando suburb, according to local police. It's unclear what led to the violent run-in.

A bullet missed Zimmerman's head, but he was sprayed with glass from his windshield and another debris in the shooting, his attorney Don West said. Aerials of the scene showed the passenger side window that shattered, striking Zimmerman with glass and sending him to the hospital.

Apperson and Zimmerman were involved in a road-rage encounter earlier this year. But Apperson's attorney, Mark NeJame, said he knew of no ongoing feud between the two men.

"It's not been an ongoing feud on behalf of Mr. Apperson," NeJame told reporters Monday evening after Apperson was questioned by police officers. "By all indications, Mr. Apperson has not had any ongoing issues from his perspective."

Apperson was accompanied by his mother and wife as he left the Lake Mary Police Department.

"I have faith that the justice system is going to work in this case," said Apperson's mother, Janet White. "Matt is a good man. I'm sorry this is happening to him."

Zimmerman - who was acquitted of murder charges two years ago in the death of Trayvon Martin - and Apperson were involved in the road rage incident last September. Apperson said Zimmerman threatened to kill him, asking "Do you know who I am?" during a confrontation in their vehicles.

Apperson decided not to pursue charges and police officers were unable to move forward without a license plate number or witnesses.

On Monday, Apperson reported the shooting to a 911 dispatcher, Lake Mary Police Officer Bianca Gillett told a news conference. Zimmerman, meanwhile, flagged down an officer to report someone had shot at him. On Tuesday, police released part of a redacted 911 call from a witness.

"A guy right here just said he had to shoot at someone through his window so he wants police to come," the caller told the operator.

At a news conference Tuesday, Gillett said no charges had been filed. She added that investigators had obtained search warrants for the vehicles involved.

"We have not determined how or why the incident or altercation began," she said.

West said Zimmerman wasn't seriously hurt and his injuries were minor. He was treated at a hospital and released.

West said before the news conference that Zimmerman thought he knew who was responsible for the shooting and is cooperating with authorities.

A woman who answered the phone at the disability-benefits business where Apperson works asked a reporter never to call again. Nobody answered the door at his Winter Springs condominium, where there is a "for sale" sign out front and a lock box on the door.

Since the Trayvon Martin incident, Zimmerman has had several brushes with the law. In January, Zimmerman was accused of assault by his girlfriend. She later recanted her story and the case was dropped. And in 2013, more allegations of domestic violence were dropped after his girlfriend said she didn't want to pursue the case. No charges were filed in either case.
