Man Kills His Parrot During Fight With Girlfriend: Cops

Police said the couple was arrested after a fight Thursday morning

A Gainesville couple was arrested after a woman punched her boyfriend for fatally throwing his pet parrot to the floor during an argument, the Gainesville Sun reported.

Luis Enrique Quinones, 25, and Myres Luanny Thomas, 29, were arrested early Thursday morning. Quinones, who remains in jail on $15,000 bond, faces one count of cruel death to an animal. Thomas faces a charge of simple assault and battery, according to the Sun.

The couple, who had been dating for four years, began to argue when Thomas told Quinones that she consumed a beer while she was at work, authorities said. When Thomas threw Quinones’ belongings out the door, he grabbed his 5-month-old parrot and slammed it on the tile floor, where it died immediately, the newspaper said.

“It’s my parrot. I can do whatever I want with it. I threw it so I wouldn’t hit my girlfriend,” Quinones said according to an arrest report.

Thomas then proceeded to punch Quinones in the face, which left the area around his eye swollen, the newspaper said.

It wasn't immediately known if either had attorneys.

Police said the parrot was a healthy bird before the incident.
