Man Surrenders After Lengthy Standoff at Hialeah Home

The Hialeah home was located beside a canal

A 40-year-old Hialeah man was taken into custody Thursday afternoon, ending a standoff with police at his house that lasted about 14 hours, police said.

The incident began at midnight in the area off 55th Street and 6th Ave.

Hialeah police spokesman Carl Zogby said William Gomez, 40, was wanted on two warrants, DUI and assault, and he was spotted at midnight. He jumped into the canal in the back of his home, hid there for two hours and then made his way into the home, Zogby said.

Streets around the home were closed to traffic as police officers and SWAT members surrounded his home.

"He's bad news," Zogby said. "He has extensive criminal history."

Zogby added that authorities weren't going to storm the house, and that Hialeah Police were waiting for Miami-Dade Police to come and arrest Gomez.

Several gas bombs were launched and Gomez didn't respond, but he finally surrendered after being Tasered, police said.

Hialeah Police said they plan to charge Gomez with eluding an officer as well.
