Top 3 Questions for Miami Dolphins Entering Preseason Opener

What to Know

  • Will Miami surprise this season or will the Dolphins tank for whoever they decide will be the best pick in the 2020 NFL Draft?

Fans of the Miami Dolphins can rejoice in the fact that Thursday marks the preseason opener for the team when the host the Atlanta Falcons – kicking off a season where first year head coach Brian Flores could either surprise some experts or be just as bad as many think the team will be.

After a 7-9 record last season – the team’s seventh losing campaign in the last 10 seasons – Flores was hired from his job as an assistant with the New England Patriots, where he had just come off winning his fourth Super Bowl title as a member of the staff.

But, with a lineup that has some fans wondering who they will actually know on this year’s roster, some fans are just hoping for a couple wins to avoid a dreaded winless season. Will Miami surprise this season or will the Dolphins tank for whoever they decide will be the best pick in the 2020 NFL Draft?

Here are the top three questions for the Dolphins as they get ready to kick off the 2020 preseason.

No. 1 – Who will be starting at quarterback for the regular season opener, Ryan Fitzpatrick or Josh Rosen?

Both men will be taking their first snaps in a game for the aqua and orange on Thursday night, and right now Flores and the staff have not been clear about which player may have the lead heading into the race for the start in the September 8th opener against the Baltimore Ravens.

Judging by the way training camp went, the edge has to go to Fitzpatrick because of the amount of reps he has taken with the first team at this point. However, if Rosen can show off the skills that got Miami to trade for him from the Arizona Cardinals during April’s NFL Draft, there could at least be an interesting battle.

No. 2 – Who on defense is going to keep guys like Tom Brady from making the 2019 season miserable for the Dolphins?

It’s not exactly the 1985 Chicago Bears or 2000 Baltimore Ravens that will be suiting up for the Dolphins this season, but the defensive side of the ball is not exactly bare when it comes to players who can make things respectable inside Hard Rock Stadium this season.

The star is cornerback Xavien Howard, who will be forced to carry the load for much of the unit. For the preseason, expect to see plenty of action from the team’s young players – in particular, defensive tackle Christian Wilkins as the rookie from Clemson looks to show why the team picked him in the first round last April.

No. 3 – It’s not really going to be that bad of a season…is it?

Dolphins fans should be prepared for the worst-case scenario at all times…and with this year’s team, there is a decent chance that the Dolphins could be knocked out of the playoff conversation not long into the season with the group they put together.

Now, we’re not saying this team is going to be 1-15 like they were in the 2007 season. But, if we’re going to be honest about things for a moment this is a team that legit could win three or four games at this point. However, stranger things have happened – like how the 2008 team bounced back to go 11-5 and win the division.
