Uncle Arrested Months After Niece, 2, Shot Herself

A southwest Florida man faces several charges after his 2-year-old niece accidentally shot herself with a gun authorities say he left lying on a bed.

She survived the injuries suffered in the Oct. 19 shooting. Lee County Sheriff's officials say 22-year-old Trevon Armstrong was arrested Monday night after he surrendered to authorities.

A sheriff's news release says Armstrong lived with his sister and the child in Lehigh Acres, near Fort Myers. The girl's mother told investigators she was charging her iPad when she heard a loud "pop." She then saw a gunshot wound on the child's stomach and saw a semi-automatic pistol fall from Armstrong's bed.

Investigators say Armstrong left the gun in an unsafe location.

He's charged with culpable negligence and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon.
