Police are investigating a shooting early Wednesday morning in Coral Springs involving one of their officers that landed one person in the hospital and another in custody.

Officers responded to a call about shots possibly being fired between two vehicles near 38th Street and University Drive around 12:30 a.m. when an officer noticed one of the vehicles reportedly involved – a white BMW – heading eastbound on Sample Road.

A second officer spotted the car and followed behind it, according to Sgt. Carla Kmiotek from the Coral Springs PD, with the BMW crashing between Riverside Drive and Northwest 85th Avenue and shots being fired.

The driver of that car was taken to Broward Health North with gunshot wounds while the passenger was detained by Coral Springs officers. Police have not released their conditions or identities nor have they said whether the man was shot during the first incident or by the officer whop opened fire.

Officials did say that the officer involved is okay and the initial scene may have been drug related, adding that a gun was found near the BMW.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has taken over the investigation of the police-involved shooting portion of the case while officials continue searching for the second car involved in the initial call, which investigators say was a silver Dodge Charger driven by a white male.

Sample Road remained closed in both directions between Riverside Drive and NW 85th Avenue for nearly eight hours as the investigation continued, opening just before 9 a.m.
