Rock School Worth Waking Up For

Miramar kids rocking out with teacher five days a week

Dozens of Broward fourth and fifth graders love rock so much, they’re willing to wake up extra early five days a week to rehearse.

Music teacher Matthew Goldberg started his own Rock School at Silver Shores Elementary in Miramar last school year. Now, 45 nine- and ten-year-olds make up the Silver Eagles band, and rock out with him every morning before class.

“They’re awesome,” said Goldberg, “I would play with them anywhere, they sound fantastic.”

The kids feel fantastic too.

“I feel like I’m famous sometimes when I’m in rock school,” said nine-year-old Amaya Urbina. “I feel like I’m on stage.”

Her teacher got the idea from telling kids about his own band, Stirling Road.

“I’m like, how cool would it be if they started their own rock band?” Goldberg remembered. “I auditioned people, they showed up and last year we started working.”

The kids rehearse for concerts and for charity. Last year the Silver Eagles raised $800 dollars for Haiti earthquake victims, Goldberg said.

“I wanted to show them what good you could do with music too,” said Goldberg. “They really feel part of something and that’s something that only being in a band and being part of music can give you.”
