Man Paying for Meals in Florida Waffle House Shot Dead: Sheriff

Exekiel Hicks charged in murder of Craig Brewer, authorities say

A man who was picking up restaurant tabs at a Florida Waffle House was shot and killed during an altercation at the eatery, authorities said.

Craig Brewer, 41, was killed inside the restaurant on West Newberry Road in Gainesville just after 3 a.m. Sunday, Alachua County Sheriff's Office officials said.

Officials told the Gainesville Sun that Brewer had been paying for other customers' food and handing out money when a female customer became upset that Brewer hadn't picked up her tab.

A short time later, the suspected killer, 25-year-old Ezekiel Hicks, left the restaurant and armed himself with a handgun, officials said. He went back into the restaurant and approached Brewer and shot him in the head, officials said.

The entire incident was captured on the Waffle House's surveillance cameras, officials said.

Hicks was quickly found and arrested near the scene, officials said. A handgun was also recovered at the scene, authorities said.

Hicks now faces charges of first-degree murder and carrying a concealed weapon, and remained behind bars without bond Tuesday, jail records showed. Attorney information wasn't available.
