Mayors Celebrate ‘Bike to Work Day” by Riding at the Metrorail University Station

Mayors and first African American to win an Olympic medal in track cycling all participated in a ceremonial ride at the Metrorail University Station to celebrate Bike to Work Day.

To celebrate the national Bike to Work Day, Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez was to ride his bike and the train to County Hall in downtown Miami on Friday, The Miami Herald reported.

Joining him was Key Biscayne Mayor Frank Caplan, Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado and Nelson Vails, the first African American to win an Olympic medal in track cycling.

Together they were to complete a ceremonial ride at the Metrorail University Station Thursday in hopes of showing residents that biking is a safe and doable option for commute.

The event was open to the public, and anyone with a bike was invited to tag along.

Mechanics from Mack Cycle were to be present, giving bike-safety checks and last-minute adjustments. They were also to provide bikes and helmets for those who wanted to participate, the report said.

After the ceremony, some were to continue the bike ride to Brickell and downtown Miami, using the M-Path trail that runs underneath the elevated Metrorail tracks.
