Residents Protest Power Outage in Miami Apartment Complex

Many elderly people and children live inside the units affected

Residents at a Miami apartment building say they haven't had power since Wednesday night.

"This is unfair to us. Treat us like human beings," said resident Roslin.

Frustration grew among residents at the Santa Clara II apartments because they say they haven't been told what's causing the power outage.

“I cannot climb 12 floors. I have bad knees. I have an illness. This has to stop," said Roslin.

A spokesperson for the Santa Clara II Apartments said in a statement Monday that they immediately brought engineers to the property after the electrical panel conduit that supplies power to 108 apartments malfunctioned.

"We immediately brought engineers to the property, who discovered that repairing the panel will require a specialty part that is not readily available. We are working closely with Siemens to acquire the part, fix the panel, and to restore power to the affected units as soon as possible," the statement read in part.

NBC 6's Julia Bagg has more on why some families are furious about the outages that have lasted for days.

Many elderly people and children live inside the units affected.

"My mom had to go to the hospital because she relies on a BiPAP machine and she cannot live without electricity," said resident Dorothea.

Residents said office staff brought food to the residents affected on Saturday and Sunday.

"In the meantime, we have been regularly updating residents at the property about the situation and have been working to accommodate those affected, including by offering temporary hotel accommodations," the apartment spokesperson said. "We apologize for the stress, frustration and inconvenience that this situation has caused for our residents.”
