“El Chapo” Almost Captured: Mexican Official

To Mexican authorities, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton wasn't the most important person in the resort town of Los Cabos last month. That title belonged to the most-wanted drug lord known as El Chapo, who apparently was hiding in plain sight in the town — and who apparently just barely evaded capture. Mexico's assistant attorney general for organized crime probes confirmed Sunday that police almost captured El Chapo (whose real name is Joaquin Guzman) in late February. Guzman has been on the lam since he escaped from prison in 2001, and there is now a $7 million bounty for him in Mexico and the U.S. The news of the near-miss last month raises suspicions that the government is closing in on him. His capture could give a big boost to President Felipe Calderon's National Action Party, which is trailing in polls, ahead of the election July 1.
