Crews Rescue Person Hanging From Key Biscayne Building After Scaffold Collapse

Rescue crews from Key Biscayne and Miami saved a worker hanging from a high rise building on the Grand Bay Resort.

Reports came in shortly after 2:30 p.m. at 430 Grand Bay Drive of the person hanging from the 6th and 8th floor as a result of a scaffold collapse.

A resident at the building told NBC 6 that a contractor, identified as Marcus Perdomo, was on a scaffolding doing exterior work when it tipped.

About an hour after emergency crews arrived to the scene, the worker was safely lowered to the ground.

"He was constantly communicating with us," said Miami Fire Rescue Deputy Chief Marcos Osorio. Officials said they secured the area and attached a red line to the worker's harness before lowering the man.

Miguel Perez and Timonthy Gleason are part of the technical rescue team. They are the two men seen on video who cabled down to Perdomo.

"He was pretty heavily entangled in his equipment and his harness was not, as you said he was kind of a big guy, his harness was not made to fit so we were dealing with some problems with his harness," said Perez.

Perez added that the worker was calm when he reached him. "He just was feeling like he was choking because his harness was loose," explained Perez.

Perdomo was put on a stretcher and taken to Jackson's Ryder Trauma Center to be checked. He appeared conscious and alert when he was rescued. Miami Fire Rescue officials said Perdomo had some numbness in his leg. He was in stable condition.

Perdomo works for the Coast to Coast company.

Miami Fire thanked Key Biscayne Fire Department for a good job securing the worker before they arrived to the scene.

"It's a great feeling and it's nice when we get situations like this because the countless hours that we put in for training, we get to see the fruits of our labor," said Gleason.

The cause of the collapse is under investigation.
