Suspicious Shoes Cause Bomb Scare at 2 Schools

Two schools locked down over a pair of sneakers

A pair of sneakers caused a massive panic at a South Florida middle school Wednesday after the bomb squad was called in to diffuse the situation.

Attucks Middle School was locked down for three hours after a maintenance worker discovered a "suspicious package" in the parent pick up/drop off area of the school.

The shoebox was wrapped in red and white tape, an obvious marking for a bomb or just a sign a student was really protective of their kicks.

A nearby elementary school was also evacuated as the Hollywood bomb squad was called in to investigate the potentially explosive shoebox.

After three hours, detectives determined the package was not deadly and that school could return to normal.

The Broward School Board said the shoebox contained - wait for it - a pair of tennis shoes.

"We always have to err on the side of caution," Broward School District Spokeswoman Marsy Smith told the Sun-Sentinel. "More than likely it fell out of a car."

Wednesday turned out to be a lesson in the obvious for students.
