The tax-free holiday weekend, one of the biggest shopping periods of the year, begins Friday, and South Florida retailers are ready.
“Being able to participate on this tax holiday weekend helps our customer save a little money,” said Willy Santiso, store manager at Walmart in Doral.
The big change this year involves computers. You’ll be able to buy them – without paying sales tax – as long as they’re selling for $750 or less and they’re for personal use. This includes desktop computers, laptops and tablets, as well as certain accessories, like portable hard drives and headphones. Printers and printer cartridges are also included. This is the first time since 2015 that you’ll be able to buy these items without paying sales tax.
“Something is something,” said Ada Sarmiento, a mom out shopping for her kids. “I would take advantage of it if I needed one.”
Clothes, shoes and certain accessories are also included in the holiday this year. And it’s not just for the kids. Adult clothing – even lingerie – is included, as long as they’re selling for $60 or less.
You’ll also be able to buy school supplies tax-free, as long as they don’t cost more than $15 an item.
Many retailers are having special sales this week, just in time for the holiday, which starts Friday, August 4th and runs through Sunday, August 6th. No sales tax also applies to online purchases, if you prefer not fighting the crowds.
