Scam Artist Hits Dania Beach Wells Fargo

The Broward Sheriff’s Office asked for the public’s help Wednesday to capture a scam artist who stole $60,000 from a Wells Fargo Bank in Dania Beach.

Detectives said the woman strolled into the bank “looking very much like a woman who might have a fortune in the bank.” The scammer then calmly asked to withdraw $60,000 from her account. The woman used the identity of an actual bank customer and showed a doctored driver license with her picture and the victim’s personal information for the withdrawal.

According to the BSO, the scam artist even correctly answered security questions posed by the state at the Wells Fargo bank when making the large deposit.

BSO said the crime happened on April 17, but wasn’t reported until April 23. The victim, a 69-year-old Lake Worth woman said she contacted BSO after seeing the withdrawal on a bank statement.

BSO said the woman may have ties to Georgia because a debit card previously ordered on the victim’s account was mailed to a Stone Mountain, Georgia arrest.

If you have any information about the scam artist, call BSO at 954-321-4255 or Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS (8477).
