ICYMI: Tax-Free Weekend; Porn Extortion Scam

Here are some of the past week's top stories from the NBC 6 Weekend Digest:

Florida's Tax-Free Weekend Underway

From Aug. 2 through Aug. 6, Florida shoppers will not have to pay the sales tax on clothes and classroom supplies.

Shoppers will also avoid paying sales tax on computer equipment costing up to one thousand dollars. Last year’s back-to-school tax holiday didn’t include computer equipment. The return of computers and accessories is expected to create increased sales.

Woman Target of Porn Extortion Scam Using Bagels

All Arlene Kaganove wanted was a free bagel on her birthday. It's the reason the woman signed up for the MyPanera Rewards card. But Arlene said she never anticipated what she got instead.

"Extortion letters," she said about the threatening emails she got that said someone had recorded her watching porn. "Which I find hilarious."

The letters demanded Arlene pay $1,400 in Bitcoin to get that recording and said they had seen her "…doing nasty things!"

Arlene wasn't worried because she knew if she had been watched, "They'd see this little old lady sitting there, cursing at the computer, 'cause it's not doing what I want it to do," she said.

Man Returns Lost Wallet to Post Office, Ends Up in Handcuffs

Vincent Mendieta thought that his night of loss had come to an end after gambling in the early morning hours of Christmas Eve. He packed up his things to head home from the Seminole Hard Rock Casino in Hollywood, but his day took a quick turn after he saw something on his way out.

He found a wallet near escalators. Vincent is from New York. He told us that in the Big Apple it’s common practice to return a lost wallet accompanied with an I.D. to a U.S. postal service blue box. He said he was close to his car so he decided to take the wallet intending to drop it off at the post office later that day.

What he didn't know was that numerous police officers would arrest him days later.
