Miami Commissioners Set Date to Discuss Future of Ultra Festival at Virginia Key Location

What to Know

  • Officials from Ultra have said they would like to return while some commissioners have already said they oppose the new location.

By next month, concert goers will know if the annual Ultra Music Festival will be returning to its latest home on Virginia Key.

The Miami Herald reported that Miami city commissioners will hold a public hearing on Thursday, May 9th to make a decision about whether the three-day electronic music festival can stay for at least one more year – a move that took place after almost two decades in Downtown Miami.

Organizers and the city have entered into a two month time period where either side can revoke the agreement that allows two sites, Miami Marine Stadium and Virginia Key Beach Park, to be used for the event according to the paper.

Officials from Ultra have said they would like to return while some commissioners have already said they oppose the new location.

Key Biscayne council members reaffirmed their opposition to the event being held at its current location during a meeting this week.

The Miami Police Department released numbers last week, showing a total of 35 people had been charged with various crimes during Ultra. A total of 13 people were arrested for battery, trespassing or resisting arrest while another eight were charged with drug offenses.

While it's the first time in six years that the number of arrests has gone up - with 27 arrests during the 2018 event in Downtown Miami - it was equal to the number of arrest during the 2017 event and was still down nearly half from the 67 arrests in 2016.
