Mobile Dating Apps Connecting More People Looking For Love

Some 14 million people use the apps, an expert says

It's estimated that mobile dating apps will be a $1.4 billion industry in just two years. It's how people are finding love.

"They're not just using them for phone calls,” author and online dating expert Julie Spira said. “They're making dates, reservations, buying shoes, buying books ... and dating fits into that as well."

Many traditional online dating sites are now launching their own apps. Spira said some offer instant gratification.

"We call it location-based service dating, so if you're at a Starbucks and there's somebody down the street at a sandwich shop and you're on the same mobile app, maybe you can meet for dessert," Spira said.

Spiro said 14 million people use mobile dating apps. Her website,, lists the best 10 as:

10. Four Square, 9. Flirtomatic, 8. Grindr, 7. Are You Interested, 6. eHarmony, 5. SKOUT, 4. Zoosk, 3. Speed Date, 2. Match Mobile, and 1. Meet Moi.

Meet Moi is one of those apps that alerts you when a match is nearby. It also became the first matchmaking service to integrate with Facebook.

"I say go ahead. The whole world is going mobile, mobile, mobile,” Spira said. “Be smart. Use your intuition and don't rush into meeting people you don't know really quickly. Avoid that light night drinking because you don't want to put yourself in a situation you wish you hadn't gotten yourself into."
