Man Fatally Shot Self After Kidnapping Girlfriend, Shooting at Officer in Southwest Miami-Dade: Police

Officer not injured in shootout in southwest Miami-Dade

Authorities said a man who kidnapped his ex-girlfriend and opened fire on an off-duty officer in southwest Miami-Dade fatally shot himself Monday.

Gregory Wright, 25, barricaded himself in a home in Homestead before shooting himself, police said. He had been sought in the shooting that happened in the area of Southwest 278th Street and S. Dixie Highway, Miami-Dade Police spokeswoman Rosanna Cordero-Stutz said.

The ex-girlfriend, 25-year-old Bernita Jones, was not injured, police said.

Earlier Monday Jones and Wright were involved in a fight at 14840 Naranja Lakes Blvd. Circle, which escalated and he kidnapped her, police said.

Three Killed in Separate Shootings

An off-duty female police sergeant from West Miami who was in the area responded and encountered Wright, who opened fire on her, Cordero-Stutz said.

The officer, who wasn't injured, returned fire but Wright was able to flee with Jones, Cordero-Stutz said.

After dozens of officers had searched by ground and air, Wright was located at a relative's house at 15272 Southwest 281st Street. He was inside the home with a 41-year-old man and three children ages 2 months to 9 years old, none of whom were injured.

Police had set up a perimeter between Southwest 278th Street and 284th Street and 152nd Avenue to U.S. 1.
