La Perla Manager Accused of Placing Camera in Women's Bathroom: Police

A West Kendall restaurant manager is being accused of recording customers in the women's bathroom, according to Miami-Dade Police.

It happened at La Perla Peruvian Restaurant located at 13742 Southwest 152nd Street.

Hajime Maruyana, 42, faces criminal charges after a customer found a hidden camera facing the toilet under the bathroom sink. Maruyana has been charged with tampering with evidence and resisting police.

Police said a mother took her young daughter into the restaurant's bathroom when she found the device.

"When I went to grab it, it fell. That's when I saw it was a camera with a battery, chip and USB drive," the mother told NBC 6 over the phone.

The mother gave the phone to the manager who became "very nervous," according to the police report. He then allegedly took the camera and went out of sight. That's when the woman said she called police.

Maruyana's mother owns the restaurant. They called their attorney right away, who showed up and refused to answer any questions by police and would not comment to the media.

Investigators have the camera in their custody and are reviewing any possible footage.

Maruyana has been released on bond.
