Thousands waited in line to receive food vouchers for the holidays in Little Havana.
After camping out for hours, hundreds of hopefuls in Little Havana were able to receive their ticket to a free holiday food basket Wednesday.
This year marked the 28th annual Holiday Season Baskets Food Drive Charity event, where 3,000 vouchers to receive donated bags filled with food items for the holidays were handed out to families in need.
Juanita Alvarez, a great-grandmother, said she spent five days just to be sure she would not miss out.
"I do make a lot of food for everybody," she said. The Puerto Rican native enjoys making island rice specialties for Christmas. Now she'll be able to cook for 20 family members. "Thank you Camacol!" she shouted, smiling and waving her ticket.
Camacol, the Latin Chamber of Commerce, partners with local supermarkets, including Publix and Sedano's, to put together baskets of pork, vegetables, rice, and desserts for 3,000 families.
"If you see them happy now, wait until you see them the day that we give it away," said Luis Cuervo, who gave out basket tickets for Camacol.
On December 18th, ticket holders will return to pick up the food baskets.
