Miami Police released new surveillance video Wednesday capturing the armed holdup of a Midtown cafe where several patrons including a Miami Heat player were robbed.
Heat shooting guard Roger Mason Jr. and his sister are seen in the video huddling on the floor after a man wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt entered the Ni.Do. Caffe at 73rd Street and Biscayne Boulevard just after 9:30 p.m. Sunday.
The gun-toting man forced a cafe staffer to empty the register of $800, as a second armed robber, also wearing a hoodie and concealing his face, enters through a back door.
The two are seen taking several items from and around Mason's table. Later, it was revealed that thieves made off with a diamond-encrusted Rolex watch, which police said belongs to Mason, and a purse, which is believed to be his sister's.
Meantime, police on Wednesday released details of a second armed robbery that they said may have been connected to the Mason incident.
Two men wearing hooded sweatshirts robbed The District Restaurant at 190 Northeast 46th St. at gunpoint early on Nov. 19, ordering patrons and employees to the floor while they took their property from their pockets and the cash register. The suspects made off with about $3,000 in cash and property and are still at large, according to police.
Police said they believe the earlier robbery is possibly related to the one that occurred at the Ni.Do. Caffe.
In the Ni.Do. Caffe case, the camera doesn't show the dark-colored Cadillac Escalade which witnesses said the two thieves and two other men fled away in afterward. One of the masked men also fired his weapon on the way out.
Police said they were able to track down the getaway vehicle and two of the subjects after an officer-involved car pursuit in northeast Miami-Dade.
Authorities arrested Steven Dawson, 30, and Rashaud Stroud, 32. Both men are charged with armed robbery with a firearm, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a firearm while committing a felony, police said.
Dawson was also charged with possession of stolen property, police added. His arrest form indicates that the Rolex watch was found on his person after he was searched. Authorities said they also found marijuana on him as well.
Police also recovered Mason's sister's purse.
Police believe there are at least two more men tied to the robbery and perhaps others. Anyone with information is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477.
