A man is facing a grand theft auto charge after he stole a North Miami Beach Police car because he "just wanted to drive around for a little bit," police said.
Stalyn Enrique Hernandez, 28, was arrested shortly after stealing the marked Fort Crown Victoria cop car from the police station at 16901 Northeast 19th Avenue around 5 p.m. Sunday, according to a North Miami Beach Police arrest report released Monday.
According to the report, Hernandez got into the car, which may have been unlocked, and found the key inside. He drove off and when police realized the car was missing, a search began.
The car was spotted heading north on West Dixie Highway approaching Northeast 172nd Street, where it was stopped at a red light, the report said.
When an officer approached the car, Hernandez rolled down the window and said "I just wanted to drive around for a little bit," the report said.
He was taken into custody without incident and there was no damage to the car.
During a bond court appearance Monday, Hernandez was ordered held on $5,000 bond. It was unknown whether he has an attorney.
North Miami Beach Police said there is an internal investigation into the incident.
