Car Theft Suspect Tries to Flee Hallandale Beach Cop, Fails



    Man Confronts Attempted Carjacker in Act

    A suspected car thief didn't get far when he tried to run away from a Hallandale Beach officer Friday morning.

    An NBC 6 crew was at a gas station on Hallandale Beach Boulevard when the suspect, who was being questioned about an earlier grand theft auto attempt. The suspect suddenly tried to flee but was quickly taken to the ground by an officer.

    The incident began with the attempted car theft at the gas station. Sal Paschall, who is visiting South Florida from Philadelphia, said he was filling up his rental car when he noticed it was being stolen.

    "I saw my car taking off while I was in the store, so I ran up to it and got in it," Paschall said. "I asked him to pull over and he wasn't so I grabbed him by the throat and threw him into traffic."

    Paschall said once he got the car under control, he called 911. The officer were talking to the suspect about the incident when he made his desperate bid to get away.

    The suspect was later identified as 27-year-old Gustavo A. Masis Flores. It's unknown what charges he may face.
