Man Fatally Shot in Attempted Craigslist Robbery: Police

A man was shot and killed in Coral Springs after police said he was involved in an attempted robbery of a buyer responding to a Craigslist ad.

Police said they found Jason Mageau lying on the floor with a gunshot wound when they arrived in the area of 2900 Riverside Drive at around 12:19 A.M. on Wednesday. A man named Duwayne Lewis, claiming to be Mageau’s friend, was also at the scene, police said.

Lewis told police that the two were trying to sell a cell phone to a buyer who ended up attempting to rob them. Lewis said the buyer shot Mageau after they refused to comply with the robbery.

Mageau was taken to Broward Health North and later died, police said.

Police said they later received a call from a man who said it was Lewis and Mageau who tried to rob him when he showed up to purchase a phone the two posted on Craigslist. Dermaine Spencer said he fired his own gun and struck Mageau after Mageau brandished a firearm and used it to hit him over the head.

Lewis has been charged with murder for his involvement in the robbery, police said.
